Privacy policy
MillionTabs is a browser extension that sorts your open tabs into your own groups and ranks them. It has no server of its own and no user accounts. Everything described here happens in your browser, except the requests to TypeSafe described under “What is sent, and to whom”.
This policy covers the MillionTabs extension and this website, milliontabs.de.

The MillionTabs extension
What MillionTabs reads
- Open tabs: title, address (URL), site icon and when the tab was last used. Needed to list, group and rank tabs.
- Page content (optional): only when “Send page text and metadata to TypeSafe” is on and you have allowed access to the pages you visit. MillionTabs then reads the page’s metadata (Open Graph tags, description, author, keywords, language, canonical address, first heading, publication date, preview image address) and the first ~1,000 characters of visible text.
- Never read: private and incognito windows (the extension is not allowed to run there), the browser’s own pages, PDF files, and page content on sites you list under “Never send page content for these domains” (common mail and banking sites are on that list by default).
What is sent, and to whom
To judge a tab, MillionTabs sends a request to TypeSafe (api.typesafe.ai), using the API key you entered. A request contains:
- the tab’s title and domain;
- with page text on: the path of the address (no query string), the page’s description, site name, type, author, keywords, language, first heading, the article’s age in days, and the text excerpt;
- your group names and descriptions, and the text you entered under “What matters most to you”;
- the titles and domains of pages you filed into a group by hand (as examples);
- with the “workstream” strategies (Advanced settings): the titles and domains of your other open tabs;
- with the “first pick” strategies (Advanced settings): the title, domain and description of every tab in a group.
Preview images, closed-tab history, parked projects and your settings are never sent. MillionTabs’s developer receives none of this data. There is no analytics, tracking or advertising.
TypeSafe is TypeSafe AI, Inc. (USA). It processes the requests under its own terms and privacy policy (typesafe.ai/legal/privacy-policy), which you accepted when you created your API key. According to TypeSafe, your inputs are not used to train or fine-tune AI models. Privacy requests to TypeSafe go to privacy@typesafe.ai.
Transfer to the USA. TypeSafe's services are hosted in the United States, so the data in the requests is transferred to the USA. TypeSafe's privacy policy names no safeguards for this transfer, such as certification under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses. The transfer is therefore based on your explicit consent (Art. 49(1)(a) GDPR). Possible risks: the level of data protection in the USA may be lower than in the EU, US authorities may be able to access the data, and your rights may be harder to enforce there.
What is stored in your browser
In the extension’s local storage, on your device only:
- your settings, including your TypeSafe API key;
- TypeSafe’s answers for each page, and the page fields that were sent (removed after 7 days without the page being open);
- closed tabs, so you can search and reopen them (up to 1,000 entries, removed after 90 days);
- your corrections (manual moves and pins) and the lessons learned from them;
- parked projects, and optionally a bookmark folder “MillionTabs — parked” if you switched that on;
- preview image addresses for the full view.
Your choices
- Switch page text off, or exclude sites, in Settings → Privacy. Only title and domain are sent then.
- Revoke website or bookmark access on the browser’s extensions page at any time; MillionTabs then falls back to title and domain.
- Settings → Delete all MillionTabs data removes everything listed above except your settings. Uninstalling the extension removes everything, including the settings and your key.
- Data held by TypeSafe: contact TypeSafe or manage it in your TypeSafe account.
Legal basis (GDPR)
Processing in your browser serves the function you installed the extension for. Sending data to TypeSafe happens on your explicit consent, given on the welcome page (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR; for the transfer to the USA also Art. 49(1)(a) GDPR), and you can withdraw it by switching page text off, removing the key or uninstalling. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing before it.
Chrome Web Store: Limited Use
MillionTabs’s use of information received from browser APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide MillionTabs’s single purpose (organizing your tabs), is not sold, is not used for advertising or credit decisions, and is not read by humans.
This website
Hosting and server logs
This website runs on a server of net positive ventures GmbH at Hetzner Online GmbH, Gunzenhausen (Germany). Hetzner processes the data on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR).
When you open a page, the web server stores technically necessary information in log files: IP address, date and time, requested address, amount of data transferred, status code, the previous page (referrer) and browser identifier (user agent). We use this only to deliver the website, find errors and fend off attacks. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running the site securely and reliably (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Log files are deleted after 30 days.
No cookies, no third parties
This website sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser and loads nothing from third parties: no external fonts, no scripts, no analytics, no embedded content. Every file comes from milliontabs.de. Links to other websites (for example the Chrome Web Store or TypeSafe) only connect you to those providers once you click them.
Contact by email
If you write to info@milliontabs.de, we process your address and your message to reply to you (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR). We delete them once they are no longer needed for that and no statutory retention period applies.
Your rights
You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3)). Write to info@milliontabs.de.
Since the extension’s data lives only in your browser, you can exercise most of these rights there yourself, as described under “Your choices”.
You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR), for example the one responsible for us: Die Landesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz Niedersachsen, Prinzenstraße 5, 30159 Hannover, Germany.
Changes
Changes to this policy are published at this address with a new date.
